Baking is learning in motion.
Baking 101: Recipes as Curriculum is my hands-on tutoring and learning experience that uses baking as the pathway for literacy, math, science, SEL, executive functioning, and real-life confidence.
In this work, a recipe is never just a recipe. It is a text to read, a sequence to follow, a math problem to solve, a science experiment to observe, and a chance for children to practice patience, regulation, problem-solving, and pride.
What Is Baking 101?
Baking 101: Recipes as Curriculum is a high-impact tutoring experience for children who need learning to feel more concrete, connected, and useful.
Instead of separating academic skills from real life, we bring them into the kitchen. Children read recipes, measure ingredients, follow multi-step directions, observe cause and effect, make predictions, adjust when something does not go as planned, and experience the satisfaction of creating something from beginning to end.
This is especially powerful for neurodivergent learners and children who thrive with hands-on instruction, but it is designed to support all children.
What Students Practice
Through baking, students build skills across multiple learning areas at once:
Literacy
Reading recipes, vocabulary, sequencing, comprehension, fluency, and following written directions.
Math
Measurement, fractions, time, quantity, comparison, estimation, and number sense.
Science
States of matter, heat, texture, chemical reactions, observation, prediction, and experimentation.
SEL + Executive Functioning
Patience, flexibility, focus, planning, emotional regulation, task initiation, problem-solving, and confidence.
Life Skills
Kitchen safety, independence, communication, responsibility, collaboration, and real-world decision-making.
Why This Works
Children often learn best when the work feels purposeful. Baking gives children a reason to read carefully, measure accurately, listen closely, slow down, ask questions, and try again.
For many students, especially neurodivergent learners, the kitchen makes abstract skills visible. A recipe turns learning into something they can touch, smell, taste, and remember.
My approach brings together over 15 years of formal teaching experience, SPED-informed practice, Science of Reading-based literacy support, lived disability wisdom, and the creativity of the kitchen.
